I wrote the people at the Museum of Science about the Solar Max IMAX film and
got the following response, which I thought I'd share:

Dear Ms. Warshaw,
I would like to thank you for your interest in our showing "Solarmax" in the
Mugar Omni Theater.
We recently test screened "Solarmax" in order to determine the level of
general audience interest in the film. In fact, we have tested over 22 films,
several of which we have subsequently shown and now have data to compare test
screen results with box office performance as well as overall audience
satisfaction.
Based on the test performance of "Solarmax," it appears to be a very solid
educational film with very limited general audience appeal. Unfortunately,
the Museum of Science receives less than 1% of its unrestricted operating
funds from public sources. Therefore, it is important that films shown in the
Mugar Omni Theater attract enough visitors to generate this much needed
revenue. Thus the Museum cannot economically afford to bring in films that do
not have a broad appeal.
Also, companies that produce and distribute large format films are not always
very flexible in their rental agreements and do not structure agreements that
would allow us to present limited showings of good films with limited
interest.
However, we have brought in the film on a couple of occasions to show at
events and might be able to arrange with the film distributor to screen the
film should you wish to "buy-out" the theater for a special showing of
"Solarmax." Please let me know if you would be interested .
Thank you again for your interest in "Solarmax."
Sincerely,
Cherie Rivers
