(ATMoB:Discuss) Site comparison: 1960s to now
In my recent trip to North Carolina, I took along my little 102mm widefield
Celestron. I dragged it out to a golf course that I used to sneak onto as a
kid. Back then, it was just naked-eye and binos, but boy was it dark. Since
my recent rekindling of interest in observing, I thought I'd see what
difference 35 (or more) years had made.
Of course, I snuck onto the course (with my 80-year-old dad). Sadly, even
rural N.C. has discovered sprawl, and there are a few unnecessary
streetlights alongside all the new ugly luxury homes. With all that, it's
still half a magnitude better than Westford. Sadly, the South is so proud
of all its new industry that they want to light everything up 24/7.
Suggestions to the contrary seem to put you in league with William Tecumseh
Sherman. If only I had that scope way back then...
